Chapter 16: Job Offer and Acceptance

Beginning base salaries for pharmaceutical representatives range from $45,000 to $50,000, with bonuses averaging between $12,000 and $20,000 per year. Also typically included in the package are a mid-size company car (Ford Taurus is quite common), all expenses, 401K, stock options, medical/dental insurance, ophthalmic insurance and other benefits. There are opportunities to win travel awards and other perks, based on performance.

If you have chosen to negotiate the salary offer, you might consider putting yourself in the manager’s shoes and imagine how you would react in a similar situation. . If a candidate immediately begins negotiating salary, there is a strong possibility of offending the manager, or at the least, taking some wind out of his/her sails.

Do not negotiate salaries based on another company’s offer. It is also much easier to negotiate start dates.

Should you accept your current company’s counter-offer after you have submitted your resignation? Before you accept a counter-offer from your current company, be sure to ask yourself why you wanted to leave in the first place. There are some interesting statistics in today’s marketplace regarding counter-offers.
