Chapter 3: Cover Letters and Resumes

The reason most individuals include a cover letter is to explain why they are sending a resume. Most people do not realize the importance of this marvelous tool. A cover letter is where you can distinguish yourself from other candidates. It should be the instrument with which you declare your worthiness.

Blow your horn and bang your drum loudly; you must focus their attention on why they should interview you, not on why you are applying for the job.
Managers in this industry prefer an achievement-oriented resume in lieu of a functionally descriptive one. Paragraphs are difficult to read and hard to follow, especially if you don’t have a good grasp of the English language. Additionally, you can hurt yourself with poor grammar. The majority are enticed by a resume in which the accomplishments of the individual “jump” off of the page at them. Reading through a paragraph to ascertain an individual’s accomplishments takes time and can become monotonous. I have often heard managers say that they have an idea about what the person does for a living; what they want to know is how good are they at it.

Do not embellish or lie on your resume; these companies do extensive background checks and will eliminate you if your resume does not match your work history.
