Chapter 7: The “Tell Me About Yourself”
Style of Interview
The “tell me about yourself” format is the most common
interview method used by pharmaceutical companies today. There are
some variations, but the concepts and information each company is
seeking are very similar. It is also ideally suited for the person
being interviewed, since it allows you the time to sell yourself
properly to the interviewer. This interview style provides you with
a distinct advantage in overcoming objections before they arise
and for discovering hidden objections the manager is reluctant to
mention.
You must understand that the rationale and reasoning processes and
judgment you demonstrate are under meticulous scrutiny and in reality
may weigh of greater importance to the manager than your achievements
or qualifications.
You must ask yourself the “why?” questions. Answers to
these “why?” questions are solid reasons for job changes;
why you are leaving your current company; why you didn’t pursue
a job based on your major out of college; why it took you five years
to graduate, etc.
A good way to anticipate objections is to interview yourself and
identify what parts of your story are confusing or questionable.
The “tell me about yourself” segment is the absolute key
ingredient in the interview process. Failure to justify the reasoning
and rationale for career decisions has cost many a candidate the
job. It is consistently the number one reason a manager gives for
eliminating a candidate. A tremendous benefit of preparing a comprehensive
“tell me about yourself” will be the colossal increase
in the level of confidence you will experience. Your interview skills
will continue to improve as your confidence grows and you will quickly
